Puccini Centenary: A Night of His Greatest Arias

Masthead Puccini Centenary

On November 29th the timeless music of Giacomo Puccini fills the hall of the Opera House in Mumbai in honour of the centenary of the composer’s passing. In a tribute titled Puccini Centenary: An Evening of His Greatest Arias, world-class performers—soprano Maria Pia Piscitelli, tenor Renzo Zulian, and baritone Pier Luigi Dilengite, accompanied on piano by Linda Di Carlo—take the stage to perform Puccini’s beloved arias in a recital of extraordinary bel canto. The event is organised by the Consulate General of Italy and the Istituto Italiano di Cultura in Mumbai, in collaboration with the Mehli Mehta Music Foundation, Furtados, Avid Learning and Royal Opera House Mumbai.

Giacomo Puccini (1858–1924) is celebrated as one of Italy’s most influential opera composers, known for his ability to craft intensely emotional and vividly dramatic works. Often called the successor to Verdi, Puccini’s compositions blend rich orchestration with memorable melodies, bringing depth and complexity to characters and plots alike. His masterpieces, including La Bohème, Tosca, Madama Butterfly, and Turandot, remain cornerstones of the operatic repertoire, resonating with audiences worldwide. Puccini’s keen sense of theatricality, coupled with his sensitivity to the human experience, continues to make his music a profound and universal force in the world of opera.
