STUPOROSA

The contemporary dance performance Stuporosa directed by choreographer Francesco Marilungo is being featured at the International Theatre Festival of Kerala (ITFoK) and Attakkalari India Biennial (AIB) Bangalore. It is presented by Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Mumbai and Körper – Centro Nazionale Di Produzione Della Danza.

Stuporosa is a performance on ritual lamentation where the performers cry without apparent reason, giving life to a cry that takes on various nuances, at times restrained, at times with accents hope and sometimes with tones that recall an ancient Salento funeral lament. The five performers seek to recover a sense of collectivity and rituality, looking for new forms of mutual aid by whispering ancient magic formulas, evoking traditional dances, and singing a Salento lullaby. In Stuporosa, as in certain aspects of ritual crying, a stylization of pathos is observed, a de-hysterization of it, underlining the human need for shared cultural institutions and community rituals to overcome moments of individual crisis.

Francesco Marilungo is a choreographer and performer. After graduating in Thermo-Mechanical Engineering and a research period at the Von Karman Institute in Brussels, he attended the Dance Theater Atelier at Scuola d’Arte Drammatica Paolo Grassi in Milan. Since 2010 he has studied/worked with internationally renowned dancers and choreographers – Lisa Kraus and Elena Demyanenko (Trisha Brown Dance Company), Julie Anne Stanzak, Juliana Neves and Quan Bui Ngoc (Les Ballets C de la B), and Romeo Castellucci. Parallel to the activity as a dancer, he has begun his own authorial journey, focusing his research on creating atmospheres as the result of the juxtaposition of images structured on multiple levels of representation. His last work, Party Girl, was awarded the Premio Prospettiva Danza 2020 and Cross Award 2020 and was selected by NID New Italian Dance Platform 2021.
