The Italian Cultural Institute in Mumbai, in collaboration with Film Heritage Foundation, Institut Français in India and Goethe-Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan Mumbai, presents Zabriskie Point (1970) by Michelangelo Antonioni, one of the most distinctive films of the late 1960s. This screening is part of Reel Europa, a quarterly film series showcasing some of the finest restored classics of Italian, French and German cinema.

Set in the United States amid the social and cultural upheavals of the late 1960s, the film follows Mark, a young student involved in the student protests in Los Angeles, and Daria, a young woman working for a prominent real estate developer. Their paths cross in the desert of Death Valley, where their encounter becomes an opportunity to explore two different worldviews and contrasting ideas of freedom, against the backdrop of a society marked by generational conflict, consumerism and protest.

Antonioni’s first film made in the United States, Zabriskie Point captures the restless spirit of an era through vast landscapes, visionary imagery and a soundtrack featuring music by Pink Floyd and other contemporary artists. Blending cinema, music and visual experimentation, the director offers a reflection on consumer society, alienation and the desire to escape, creating one of his most daring and evocative films.
