“BINARY CODEX” – by Andrea Anastasio at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (CSMVS)

Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Mumbai is very pleased to bring “BINARY CODEX”, a retrospective collection by Italian designer/ artist and thinker Andrea Anastasio at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya Mumbai (CSMVS). The exhibition will be on display from 24 March -7 May 2023 at the Premchand Roychand Gallery.

With a background in Eastern studies and a Master’s in Indian philosophy, Andrea Anastasio is a designer and self-taught artist who has lived and worked between India and Italy throughout his life. From the two countries, working in close partnership with craftsmen communities, he has gathered vast knowledge about production processes and their cultural implications, often integrating and mingling their linguistic codes. His design work and portfolio belong with brands such as Artemide, Corraini, Danese, Foscarini, Gatti, Ceramiche and Memphis (Milan). The designer/philosopher has many credits to his name including awards and projects that have contributed to the enrichment of his professional and human journey in India and Italy from 1999 onwards. Anastasio’s dynamic approach to the works, be it in form, structure or aesthetic come from both industrial and artisanal value. Binary Codex will bring together a collection from across the globe (with loans from private collections and museums).

In conjunction with the exhibition, several side events will take place: docent walks, talks, panel discussions and educational activities for children. The exhibition also features collaborations with Indian artists Bhajju Shyam and Avinash Veeraraghavan. This exhibition has previously been produced by the Italian Embassy in New Delhi for the 75th anniversary of the Independence of India and has been showcased at their Cultural Centre in New Delhi as well as at the historical galleries of Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath, Bangalore.
