This February the Italian Book Club in Mumbai reads Ka: Stories of the Mind and Gods of India by Roberto Calasso.

Ka: Stories of the Mind and Gods of India, published in 1998, is an exploration of Indian mythology, weaving together stories of gods, sages, and cosmic events to reveal the essence of existence and the human quest for transcendence. Through figures like Garuda, the divine bird seeking liberation, and Yājñavalkya, a sage probing the ultimate truth, the book examines profound philosophical themes such as creation, karma, and the cyclical nature of life the interconnectedness of all beings, and the pursuit of liberation (moksha).

Roberto Calasso (1941–2021) was an Italian writer, editor, and intellectual, celebrated for his profound and erudite works that blend mythology, philosophy, and literature. Known for his unique narrative style, Calasso explored the timeless myths and cultural histories of different civilizations, including Indian, Greek, and European traditions.

Calasso had a deep fascination with Indian mythology, which is most vividly captured in his book Ka. He was drawn to the philosophical richness and intricate storytelling of ancient Indian texts such as the Vedas, Upanishads, and Puranas. Calasso viewed Indian mythology as a profound exploration of existence, consciousness, and the divine, offering insights that transcend time and culture. His work reflects both a scholar’s rigor and a poet’s sensitivity, making Indian mythology accessible and meaningful to a global audience.
