Landscapes of Action: The Designer in Our Times

IDD2025 – square

On the occasion of Italian Design Day 2025, the Consulate General of Italy in Mumbai and Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Mumbai, in collaboration with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (CSMVS) present Landscapes of Action: The Designer in Our Times.

In this lecture, architect and designer Stefano Mirti presents a journey through his experiences and practice as a designer in the ever-changing world of media technologies, cultural crossings, social media engagement, and the evolving nature of communication technologies and knowledge-sharing processes.

The ground beneath our feet changes every day, more than ever before, and design is a process that allows us to transform critical observations and thoughts into tangible objects and experiences. The journey of design, and the designer, becomes a telling account of our times, reflecting our ability for productive action and critical intervention to make the world a better place!

Mirti engages in a conversation with architecture theorist and critic Kaiwan Mehta (Dean, BS School of Architecture, NMIMS University) about how some of the journeys in our time are read and shared across cultural locations such as Italy and India, Europe and Asia.

Stefano Mirti is an architect, designer, and educator whose work focuses on interdisciplinary collaborations and innovative teaching methods. He co-founded IdLab Studio and led projects such as Design 101 and Relational Design, combining digital learning with social interaction. Mirti also developed the social media strategy for Expo Milano 2015 and was director of the Scuola Superiore di Arte Applicata del Castello Sforzesco in Milan from 2017 to 2024. As a prominent voice in design education and sustainability, Mirti has contributed to reshaping how design connects with society.

Kaiwan Mehta is an architect, theorist, and critic whose work spans architecture, urban studies, and visual culture. He holds a PhD and serves as the Dean of the Balwant Sheth School of Architecture at NMIMS University. He is also a member of the International Committee of Architectural Critics (CICA) and has been involved in numerous global projects, from editing and publishing to curating exhibitions. His lectures and research have contributed to the international discourse on contemporary architecture and design.

This event is part of the IIC Mumbai series DESIGNACTS / CRITICALWORLDS curated by Kaiwan Mehta.
