Dreamlike Dimension – A photo exhibition by Fiorenzo Senese

Banker and photographer Fiorenzo Senese has been living in Colaba for the past year and a half. His pictures, which aim to give the effect of faded memories, are a part of the ongoing exhibition, Dreamlike Dimension at Piramal Art Gallery, Nariman Point.The 50-year-old Italian believes that everything we do is linked to memories. “They come to us in a dreamlike dimension — hazy and unclear — but we cannot deny their presence,” says Senese, whose style is inspired by the Impressionist period. “I use techniques such as over exposure, grainy effects and out of focus frames. When we try to recall a memory, it pops up in our mind as a not-so-sharp image,” explains Senese, who first experimented with photography 35 years ago as a teenager.
Over the years, he had held exhibitions in cities he has lived or worked in, including Rome and Istanbul. While he exhibits in India for the first time, this is Senese’s fifth exhibition. Ask him about his discoveries in the city, you can hear a smile in his voice. “I found hidden corners, and a lot of hidden emotions. I am in awe of the women in India.They have such beautiful grace. I took shots at Malabar Hill, Marine Drive, Dhobi Ghat...everywhere, I found this similar enticing elegance,” he adds.
His works also include the most shot frame in Mumbai, the Marine Drive. “I have zoomed into the sun, which leaves the people in the picture as mere silhouettes. All the people in my photographs had no clue that they were being shot. I take candid and impromtu pictures. That helps me capture the moment,” concludes Senese.
