ArtOxygen together with the Italian Embassy Cultural Centre are pleased to host a special gathering with Italian artists Emilio Leofreddi, Andrea Caretto & Raffaella Spagna. The artists are in India as part of ArtO2’s latest edition of its annual public art festival [en]counters. They will present their ongoing projects that are being realised at the CST Terminus as they investigate its history and its present meaning in what is today one of the city’s most crowded and diverse locations. What were their processes, approaches, challenges and findings from their interventions? What is the relevance of art in spaces that are not accustomed to encountering it? Can the viewer’s exchange with the work, the artist transform their experience of the site? These are some of the many questions that the artists will be raising in this session.

Emilio Leofreddi Flying Carpet

The artist appropriates the digital print of the train ticket – that permits travel from one destination to another – and disfigures its pixels into knots of a carpet. He combines the traditional technique of the artisan with the electronic nodes of the ticket whose value is sealed within the frame of departure-destination. By deconstructing the visual monotony of the form and its content, Leofreddi splits the ticket into an oneiric space of smells, colours, touch where value is now generated by its cultural, social, religious function. The carpet, in flight, becomes a place for gathering, rest and prayer.

Andrea Caretto & Raffaella Spagna Mumbai Matter Experience

The duo is interested in the interrelations between people, living beings, and materials. From these connections, they generate ‘morphogenetic fields’. In Mumbai, the artists will study primary organic and inorganic matter and how they are integral to the composition of the city. They will map the physical, social, economic properties of objects that will be collected and archived from a mining site, a riverbed, the railway station and other locations.
