Pune Biennale - Habit-Co-Habit

Pune Biennale - Habit-Co-Habit

Curated by Luca Cerizza and Zasha Colah, Habit-Co-Habit is a visual, public art festival showcased throughout the city. The aim is to make art accessible to the public through genuine engagement with visual art as well as performances in varied ways.
The title of the flagship exhibition is based on a wordplay between ‘habit’ and ‘co-habit’. A habit, or ritual, is literally turned into something else, suggesting a transformation in our own behaviour: we get rid of our habits to start a cohabitation, to live with someone else, to share our living condition with the other, with another.

The works of three Italian artists are showcased in the Pune Biennale: Massimo Bartolini, Marcello Maloberti and Marinella Senatore. In his multimedia works, Massimo Bartolini manipulates light, sound, smell, and architecture to create disorienting experiences. He is interested in experimenting with expectations, relativity, and assumptions of what is fixed versus in flux; these themes become metaphors for imagination, memory, nostalgia, and obsession. Bartolini has worked with a wide range of mediums, including sculpture, photography, and performance, but is perhaps best known for his immersive installations. Audience for a Tree is a theatre/tribune designed around a tree at Sambhaji Park while at Phule Museum Bartolini presents the performance Double Shell.

Marcello Maloberti is best known for orchestrating interventions that stimulate public interaction, drawing critical attention to contemporary issues. Maloberti’s early photographic works also had performative elements. In more recent works, he has featured non-professional actors participating in events of his imagining. His works have been referred to as living sculptures with reference to his formal and careful consideration of the body’s form and physical properties in space. Maloberti also documents and presents his performance works in the form of photographs, artist’s books, or videos. Vir Temporis Actis is one of two perofrmances together with Kolossal that Maloberti presents at the Biennale at PES School and at Z-Bridge.

Trained in music, fine arts and film, Marinella Senatore practice is characterized by public participation, initiating a dialogue between history, culture and social structures. Rethinking the role of the artist as author and the public as recipient, Senatore’s work merges forms of protest, learning theatre, oral histories, vernacular forms, protest dance and music, public ceremonies, civil rituals and mass events, reflecting on the political nature of collective formations and their impact on the social history of places and communities. Her Protest Bike, conceived as both an installation and a public intervention, is available at the Pune Biennale for personal or choral public protest without cultural or thematic limit.
