Art History Lecture Series - Michelangelo and the Sistine Chapel

Michelangelo’s Celebrated Frescoes of the Creation, Fall, and Judgment of Man in the Sistine Chapel

Italian Embassy Cultural Centre in collaboration with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya are organizing a series of lectures (2 hours each) by Reshma Nayyar on major Renaissance and Baroque artists/artworks. Each lecture will begin with a one-hour presentation of context addressing major artistic trends and artworks of the period. This will be followed by an interactive second hour examining specific artworks. In the interactive portion of the lecture, participants will be guided to apply the knowledge they have already gained in order to critically evaluate for themselves important features of the artworks being discussed.

Michelangelo’s Celebrated Frescoes of the Creation, Fall, and Judgment of Man in the Sistine Chapel
What is the Sistine Chapel and how was it decorated? Why was Michelangelo called “Il Divino” (“The Divine One”) and who selected him to decorate the Sistine ceiling? What is the meaning of the term “terribilità” and why was it used in connection with Michelangelo’s art? Why was everyone shocked when the Last Judgment was unveiled?

Reshma Nayyar
Dr. Reshma Nayyar is a specialist in Baroque art, who received a PhD in Art History from Rutgers University, New Jersey, USA, where she has also taught courses in art history and expository writing.
