Masterpieces of Italian Renaissance and Baroque Painting and Architecture

Italian Embassy Cultural Centre in collaboration with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya are organizing a series of lectures (2 hours each) by Reshma Nayyar on major Renaissance and Baroque artists/artworks. Each lecture will begin with a one-hour presentation of context addressing major artistic trends and artworks of the period. This will be followed by an interactive second hour examining specific artworks. In the interactive portion of the lecture, participants will be guided to apply the knowledge they have already gained in order to critically evaluate for themselves important features of the artworks being discussed.

The Baroque Grandeur of Gian Lorenzo Bernini’s Works at the Basilica of St. Peter’s in the Vatican
Who was Gian Lorenzo Bernini? What does the term “Baroque” mean? What is a basilica? How is New St. Peter’s related to Old St. Peter’s? What do the terms “concetto” and “bel composto” mean and how are they related to Bernini’s work? What is Bernini’s contribution to the art and architecture of St. Peter’s?
