Art History Lecture Series 2019

Italian Embassy Cultural Centre in collaboration with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya are organizing a series of lectures (2 hours each) by Reshma Nayyar on Renaissance Florence and Baroque Rome. Each lecture will begin with a one-hour presentation of context addressing major artistic trends and artworks of the period. This will be followed by an interactive second hour examining specific artworks. In the interactive portion of the lecture, participants will be guided to apply the knowledge they have already gained in order to critically evaluate for themselves important features of the artworks being discussed.

Each session is aimed at a single artist, focusing on important artistic and technical concepts used in the works selected by his work:
- The artistic rivalry of Brunelleschi and Ghiberti: The dome of santa maria del fiore and the doors of the baptistery in Florence.
- Early Renaissance Painters: Masacciao, Fra Angelo and Ghirlandaio.
- Beauty, Naturalism and Stability in the Sculpture of Donatello.
- Wealth, Power and Prestige: Medici Patronage in Fifteenth-Century Florence.
- Leonardo da Vinci's Artistic Milieu, Achievements and Rivalry with his contemporaries.
- From Musical Instruments to Flying Machines: The Intricate Inventions of Leonardo da Vinci.
- Caravaggio and Naturalism Baroque Painting.
- Bernini and Borromini: Rival Architects in Baroque Rome.

 

Reshma Nayyar
Dr. Reshma Nayyar is a specialist in Baroque art, who received a PhD in Art History from Rutgers University, New Jersey, USA, where she has also taught courses in art history and expository writing. While her own research focuses on art in early modern Italy, she has also studied European and American art in New York City area museums, including the New-York Historical Society.
