Ombre (Shadows)

Ombre (Shadows)

An online homage to Dante’s Divina Commedia

Digital project

In 2021, the year in which the 700th anniversary of the death of Dante Alighieri is celebrated all over the world, father of the Italian language and supreme cantor of Western culture, Monica Casadei starts a new choreographic and digital project, which points to the heart of the Divine Comedy and of the spectators.

The choreographers and interpreters of Artemis are the protagonists of several choreographic scenes dedicated to the damned souls, which Dante meets during his infernal journey: Caronte, Minosse, Francesca Da Rimini, Farinata Degli Uberti, Pier Della Vigna, Ulysses, Count Ugolino are some of the characters chosen by Monica Casadei to investigate the human soul and compose a poetic and fascinating, disturbing picture, in which every archetype of the collective unconscious finds its own carnal and earthly manifestation. Dissipating, as Dante did, the darkness that envelops these famous damned souls and bringing them to light, literally in the spotlight, Monica Casadei chooses to follow them along a path of sin, awareness, acceptance, prayer and atonement where the point of arrival is no longer the punishment but the expressive force of the ego, in its fullness and truth.

The original minimalist sounds of luca Vianini alternate with the pieces of sacred music by Giuseppe Verdi and to famous Dante verses dedicated to the damned, interpreted by reciting voices capable of giving life and voice to those who, over the centuries, have become pure spirit. Dante’s chained triplet, with its musicality, its rhythm and its tonality, will thus enter into a close dialogue with the sinuosity of the choreographic movement and with the evocative and sacred force of the music.

Special location will not be just a background but a visual environment for each piece: dark woods, streams and places of profound mysticism such as the Basilica of Sant’Apollinare in Classe and Dante’s tomb.

Each work, autonomous in itself but in dynamic dialogue with all the others, thanks to the dramaturgical and musical thread that indissolubly binds them, will therefore not be just a choreography nor even a simple video recording of a choreography to be watched via a device, but, in line with the new frontiers of liveness that this complex pandemic period has led to emerge, it will be configured as a sophisticated digital show experience, which will enhance the choreographic composition, the chosen space, the other works it hosts and the music on which it develops the whole score, thanks to a video direction that does not limit itself to documenting what happens on stage but also operates a real translation of the choreographic choices
