The Italian Cultural Institute in Mumbai, in collaboration with the Film Heritage Foundation, the Institut Français in India, and the Goethe-Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan Mumbai, presents The Conformist (1970), by Bernardo Bertolucci, one of the most defining works of Italian political cinema. This special screening is part of Reel Europa, a quarterly showcase of the best of restored classic cinema from Italy, France and Germany.

Adapted from the novel of Alberto Moravia, the film follows Marcello Clerici, a man desperate to lead an ordinary life and escape the traumas of the past. In his quest for normalcy, he embraces the Fascist regime and accepts a mission to assist in the assassination of his former professor, an anti-fascist dissident living in Paris.

The film is renowned for its extraordinary visual style, with the masterful cinematography of Vittorio Storaro and also for its exploration of conformism and fascism. Nominated for the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, The Conformist remains one of Bertolucci’s greatest works, whose influence can be seen in the works of generations of filmmakers.
