The July meeting of the Italian Book Club in Mumbai will be dedicated to The Shape of Water (1994) by Andrea Camilleri. It is the first novel in the famous series centred on the adventures of Inspector Montalbano.
Set in the fictional town of Vigàta in Sicily, the novel begins with the discovery of the body of a well-known local politician. While the police seek a simple explanation, Inspector Montalbano decides to investigate more deeply, bringing secrets and contradictions to light.
With a lively style rich in irony, Camilleri weaves the detective story with a portrait of contemporary Sicilian society, exploring themes such as power, corruption, and the influence of organized crime. The novel also introduces the world of Montalbano, featuring memorable characters, local culture and traditions, the author’s signature humour, and the inspector’s unfailing passion for food.
The book can be read in Italian or in English translation. The discussion is open to all lovers of Italian literature and culture.
