Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Mumbai presents “Jugalbandi: The Crossing”, a first-of-its-kind performance showcasing a fusion of Mediterranean jazz and Indian classical ragas. The concert will be performed by celebrated international artists Enzo Favata, Marco Frattini and Giacomo Riggi from Italy; and Bindhumalini Narayanaswamy, Jagadeesh Ramanujam Mudambi, Vedanth Bharadwaj and Varijashree Venugopal from India.
“Jungalbandi: The Crossing” will take place on 19 April 2023 at the Bangalore International Centre (BIC) auditorium, a co-partner of the event. This concert is supported by the Consulate General of Italy in Bengaluru, Furtados and the prestigious Bangalore School of Music.
As part of the new album “The Crossing”, recorded in 2020, Enzo Favata, a nonconformist musical multi-instrumentalist, brings a new band to the international scene. “I needed jazz players that had a new feeling and approach to compositions”. The Sardinian saxophone wizard has an unquenchable spirit of adventure, and here he is with a new band that makes his music seem even more vital and essential.
To interpret new suggestions and new sound colors, Favata brought Giacomo Riggi to the vibraphone, and Marco Frattini on drums and the drum machine. To create a unique blend with Indian musical tradition, IIC invited on stage Bindhumalini Narayanaswamy (singer, composer), and Vedanth Bharadwaj (guitarist) both trained in Carnatic Music. Joining this ensemble is also Varijashree Venugopal (singer)who is known for her international experience in fusion between traditional classical music and other genres of music. Finally, Jagadeesh Ramanujam, who is an exceptionally experienced guitarist and composer – performing with pop, rock, jazz and fusion ensembles for over three decades – will be sharing the stage as well.
