As part of the celebrations in Mumbai marking 80 years of the Italian Republic, the Director of the Italian Cultural Centre in Mumbai, Mr. Raffaello Barbieri, personally supervised the installation of a distinguished selection of documents from the Historical Diplomatic Archives of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI) in Rome.
Among the documents on display was a letter signed by Count Cavour in 1859, documenting the transition of the Consulate of the Kingdom of Sardinia in Mumbai into the Consulate of the Kingdom of Italy in Mumbai, and a series of historic diplomatic correspondences related to the establishment of relations between Italy and newly independent India in 1947. These include a letter from the first Prime Minister of India, Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, also known as the Architect of Modern India.
The exhibit offered a journey through more than 160 years of diplomatic relations between Italy and India, highlighting the enduring ties that have united the two nations across several decades.
